Tevis Herd, our capital campaign Steering Committee Chair, asked me to be on the committee for the capital campaign as Christ Church prepared to launch the long needed and long-awaited funding for the additions to our church facilities. I said yes, thinking, “I’ve served on committees before, no big deal.” Imagine my surprise when I learned that we had to call on the people of our parish and ask them to prayerfully consider making a gift to see the plan through. Uh oh, I didn’t know that this was what I signed up for. Well, my first visit was with some wonderful church members and our dedicated consultant who went with me to hold my hand through my first visit. What a revelation it was. Our visit was like a family meeting, trying to decide how to give grandma a treat for her birthday. We started with small talk, got into our personal histories and testified about our love for Christ Church and our love for all its clergy and its people. We prayed and got into the publications that explained the reasons, the plan and the hope for adding onto to our home. The serious and loving reception that I received on my first visit brought happy tears to my eyes and to the consultant’s. The calls I have made since have been the same. Loving fellowship, serious questions and heartful consideration have been my experience with every visit. Tevis blessed me with a mission for which I thought I might not be well equipped for. God’s love, the Spirit’s guidance and our church people’s love for Christ Jesus and His love for us put all my trepidations to rest.
