Valley Forge, PA – During a combined worship service today at Washington Memorial Chapel of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, built in 1903, Fr. Tommy Thompson, Rector gave a passionate sermon. He said “I keep going back to those words from George Washington in December 1777 upon entering Valley Forge. Then it is recorded that Washington hoped that his army would be of one heart and one mind so as to overcome the tremendous obstacles that lay before them”. After worship about 100 worshippers marked the kickoff of a 3-year financial campaign to focus on the core pillars of preservation, education, and growth in the community of Valley Forge and beyond to position the congregation to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ for years to come and preserve this National Shrine for the world. The campaign co-chairs were delighted to announce that $1,000,000 had already been raised for the master plan.
Themed “One Heart & One Mind”, the capital campaign recognizes in 2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
The event, led by WMC Rev’d Tommy Thompson, Pat Nogar, Rector’s Warden, and President of the Heritage Foundation, David Lauhoff, included guest speaker Adrienne M. Harrison, PhD. Adrienne emphasized that Washington was a self-made man by reading many books including the Bible.
Fr. Tommy said, “Each Washington Memorial family will be contacted in the next few weeks by a fellow member for a personal visit regarding the campaign”.
The event concluded by the Chapel Carillonneur playing Bells of Celebration.
Prior to the program, the people of God shared a catered meal together, enjoyed music with a slide show of days gone by, renewing friendships with those from various services, and encouraging one another in faith and service to God. The campaign will run through 2022 with the hope of personally visiting every household in the congregation.
