Washington, D.C. – After a successful 6-week Readiness Assessment period that reached over 500 members and friends, the Session of National Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C. has unanimously agreed to move forward with a Capital Campaign.
The plans for improving the campus on Nebraska Avenue have been under development for over two years. The master plan involves greatly improved accessibility with a new central staircase and elevators, new program rooms in a previously inaccessible part of the building, a newly landscaped garden and fountain area, some long awaited deferred maintenance projects, technology upgrades, and the consolidation of staff and programming in a remodeled building adjacent to the church. The plan also includes a $1 million commitment to outreach and mission as well as a substantial commitment to the endowment. The total needed to accomplish all the improvements is just over $14 million.
The plan received overwhelming approval from those who attended one of the 20 focus group meetings. Senior Pastor Dr. David Renwick said that the Readiness Assessment was an incredibly positive experience.
“The highly relational approach to raising funds through the James D. Klote process appealed to me,” Renwick said, “and does so even more now. A good campaign of any form builds not only buildings, but the body of Christ – I have seen this happening. But in none of my congregations have I seen this more clearly displayed than in the focus groups just completed.”
Renwick added, “I feel that the strengthening of the church that has already taken place has been invaluable in and of itself.”
Campaign leadership is now being formed as the quiet phase of the campaign begins. Current plans anticipate a public Kick-Off Event in February of 2018.
National Presbyterian Church is a vibrant congregation with a rich history in Washington D.C. However, this will be the first major campaign conducted since moving to the present location on Nebraska Avenue in 1969.
